Betway App South Africa Review 2026: Download, Bonuses and Casino

The Betway app is the one most South African punters end up with, and it earns that. Betway holds a Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board bookmaker licence, with a second licence from the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator, so your money and your bets sit with a regulated SA operator. Inside the app you get a deep sportsbook, Aviator and a full casino in one place, sixteen different ways to put money in, and a set of betting tools like Bet Saver and 2UP that most rivals do not have. What you do not get is a big cash welcome bonus.

The terms, routes and rules on this page come from Betway’s own help pages, not from another review. If you are still weighing Betway against the rest, our guide to the best betting apps in South Africa puts all twelve licensed apps side by side.

How to download the Betway app

Real money betting apps are not allowed on the Google Play Store, so the Android version comes straight from Betway rather than from Google. That is the step that catches most people out. The Betway Scores app you will find on Google Play is a separate scores and news app, and you cannot bet on it. Here is each route.

Android

Open your phone settings and allow installs from unknown sources, then go to the Betway app page in your browser and tap the Android banner. The app file downloads, your phone asks you to install it, and once that is done the Betway icon sits on your home screen like any other app. You can switch unknown sources back off afterwards. If the install fails, the unknown sources setting is nearly always the reason.

iPhone

The iPhone version is a normal App Store download. Search for Betway, install it, and log in with the username and password you already use on the website. There is nothing to sideload and no settings to change.

Huawei

Huawei phones without Google services get the app from AppGallery. Open AppGallery, search for Betway, tap Install and log in. Betway lists this route on its own help pages. Not every SA bookmaker does.

If you would rather not install anything, the Betway site runs in your phone browser with the same account, the same markets and the same cashier.

Betway welcome offer and promotions

Betway does not run a fixed cash welcome bonus. When we looked, the front page promotion was a PSL leaderboard prize draw, and the standing offer for new and existing customers is the Free Bet Club, which pays R50 in weekly free bets. That is the honest position. It is the main reason Betway loses a few points to Betfred and World Sports Betting on the sign-up alone.

The Free Bet Club is worth joining if you bet multis every week. You enter once through the Bet Now banner or the SMS link and you stay locked in. To qualify in a given week you need to spend R250 or more on a Multi Bet slip between Monday and Sunday, with at least three legs, minimum odds of 1.15 on each leg and total odds of 1.5 or more. The R50 in free bets then lands on the Monday and Wednesday. Bets you place with free bets do not count towards the next week, and a leg that voids still counts as long as the slip stays a treble or more and meets the odds.

Beyond that, the promotions tab in the app rotates through sport and casino offers, and the casino side has its own bonus tab next to your cash balance. Promotions change week to week, so the app is the place to check what is running before you deposit.

How to sign up on Betway

Opening a Betway account takes a few minutes on your phone, and because there is no deposit bonus to chase, the order of the steps is simple.

  • Register: tap Sign Up on betway.co.za or in the app, enter your details and your SA ID number, and confirm the code Betway sends to your phone.
  • FICA early: Betway checks your ID number at sign-up, and if it cannot match you it asks for a photo of your ID through Menu and Documents Upload. Doing it now means your first withdrawal is not held up later.
  • Deposit: pick any of the sixteen routes below. A voucher or a USSD deposit works without a bank card at all.
  • Join the Free Bet Club: tap Bet Now on the Free Bet Club banner once, and every week you spend R250 or more on a qualifying Multi Bet earns R50 in free bets.
  • Turn on the tools: Bet Saver amounts show in your betslip automatically, and 1UP, 2UP and 3UP appear as a boost button on the match result market in the competitions that carry it.

That last step is the one new Betway customers miss. The betting tools are the reason to be here, and they are all switched on from the betslip rather than buried in settings.

Sports betting on the Betway app

Soccer comes first, with the PSL and the big European leagues at the top, then rugby, cricket, tennis and the rest of the sports list, with live betting on the games as they play. Lucky numbers sit in the same app, with no second account needed for the draws.

The market depth on soccer is where Betway pulls clear. On a normal PSL or Premier League match you get the match result, double chance, draw no bet, over and under goals from 1.5 up to 4.5, both teams to score, and the bookings markets at 2.5, 3.5 and 5.5 cards. Betway explains each of these markets on its own help pages. A punter moving from a simpler app is not left guessing.

Book-a-Bet lets you turn any pre-match slip into a code you can send to a mate, and they enter it in their own betslip to load the same picks. It only works on pre-match events, and a code with a game that has already kicked off will not load.

The betting tools that set Betway apart

This is the section that decides the rating. Most SA apps have cash out and a bet builder. Betway has those and two more that the others do not.

  • Cash Out: take part or all of a bet before it settles, or cancel a bet before kick-off and get a portion back. Betway gives a plain example on its help pages: a R10 single at 1.8 might be offered R14 when your team goes 1-0 up, or R6 if the other side scores first. On a five-leg multi with three legs already won, the offer might sit around R22 on a R10 stake with R35 to play for.
  • Build a Bet: combine between two and ten outcomes from one soccer match, such as match result, first goalscorer and both teams to score, into a single bet. It is pre-match only, it has to be placed as a single, and it cannot be cashed out. If any pick voids, the whole slip voids.
  • Bet Saver: only on Betway. On a Multi Bet, if one or more of your picks lose, Betway works out a return based on your total odds, your stake and the number of legs, and pays it back as cash. The amount shows in your betslip before you place the bet. You can see what you are covered for before you commit. It does not apply to singles, outrights or draw no bet, and you lose it if you cash out early.
  • 1UP, 2UP and 3UP: on the match result market in selected soccer competitions, pick 1UP, 2UP or 3UP on your slip and Betway pays you out as a winner the moment your team goes one, two or three goals ahead at any point in normal time, even if they go on to draw or lose. It does not apply to the draw, and in a multi that leg is simply marked as won while the rest runs on.

Bet Saver and the 2UP style payout together are the reason a regular multi bettor should have a Betway account even if they bet elsewhere too. They turn a lot of near misses into money back.

Casino and Aviator in the Betway app

The casino tab sits in the same app as the sportsbook, and it is a full one. You get slots, table games and a live casino with real dealers on roulette, blackjack, baccarat and poker, plus Aviator. Betway runs all of this as betting games under its bookmaker licence. That is how a licensed SA bookmaker can offer casino at all. It is the same legal route as lucky numbers.

Aviator is the big one. A plane takes off, the multiplier climbs, and you cash out before it flies away. Betway has its own how-to on the game and a casino games bonus that shows in the bonus tab next to your cash balance when one is running. One warning is worth the line here: anything sold as an Aviator predictor is a scam. Every round is random and no tool can call it in advance.

If you want sport, Aviator and a live casino from one login, Betway does it as well as anyone in SA. Sunbet and Betfred match it on the casino side, but neither has Betway’s betting tools on the sport side.

Deposits and withdrawals

Betway has the widest set of deposit routes of any app we cover, and a good few of them work without a bank account at all. Every one below is listed on Betway’s own banking pages.

  • From your bank: debit or credit card, Ozow instant EFT, Quick EFT, and a direct payment from the FNB, Absa, Standard Bank or Nedbank Money app.
  • With cash: a 1ForYou voucher from any Flash trader, PEP, Ackermans, Shoprite, Checkers, OK or Usave, an OTT voucher from around 20,000 outlets, a Kazang voucher, Shoprite and Checkers Money Market, Easy Load, or cash at an FNB ATM through cardless services.
  • From your phone: MTN Mobile Money, or USSD by dialling *120*48463# with any of the voucher methods.

Withdrawals go back to your bank by EFT. Open the menu, tap Withdraw Funds, choose EFT, enter your banking details and the amount, and confirm. If you do not have a bank account, or you want cash the same day, Betway also pays out to FNB eWallet, Absa CashSend, Standard Bank Instant Money and Nedbank Send-iMali, or as a 1ForYou voucher. That is the widest set of cash-out routes on the market.

You have to be FICA verified before a withdrawal goes through. Upload your ID through Menu and Documents Upload. Betway will not accept an expired passport, and you cannot change your own name, ID number or date of birth once the account is open, so get the details right at sign-up.

Betway does not publish a withdrawal processing time on its help pages. The app shows you the expected timing at the point you withdraw.

Is the Betway app legal in South Africa?

Yes. Betway South Africa is licensed twice over. Raging River Trading (Pty) Ltd holds Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board bookmaker licence 10181496, first issued in December 2016, and Eastern Dawn Sports (Pty) Ltd holds Mpumalanga Economic Regulator bookmaker licence 9-2-1-09658, first issued in April 2023. Licences in SA come from the nine provincial boards, not from a national body, and both numbers sit in the footer of the Betway site.

You have to be 18 to open an account, and winnings from a licensed SA bookmaker are not taxed. The casino, slots and Aviator run under the same bookmaker licence as betting games. A site with no SA licence at all is the one to stay away from. Betway is the opposite of that.

Betway against Hollywoodbets and Betfred

These are the three apps most SA punters choose between, so here is how they compare on the points that decide it. Every entry was read off each bookmaker’s own site.

Betway wins the app and the tools, Hollywoodbets wins the no deposit start, and Betfred wins the size of the bonus. Plenty of regulars run a Betway account for the weekly betting and a Betfred account for the welcome package, and there is no reason not to.

Pros and cons

What Betway gets right

  • The tools: Bet Saver and 1UP to 3UP are only here, on top of cash out and Build a Bet.
  • One app for everything: sport, live casino, slots, Aviator and lucky numbers under one login.
  • Sixteen ways to deposit: including vouchers, USSD and cash at an FNB ATM for anyone without a bank card.
  • Cash withdrawals: eWallet, CashSend, Instant Money, Send-iMali and 1ForYou as well as EFT.
  • Every phone covered: Android, iPhone and Huawei, with Betway’s own written steps for each.
  • Two provincial licences: Western Cape and Mpumalanga.

Where it falls short

  • No cash welcome bonus: the Free Bet Club is a loyalty scheme, not a sign-up gift.
  • Android install takes a setting change: unknown sources has to be on. That puts some people off.
  • Withdrawal times are not published: you only see them inside the app.
  • Build a Bet has no cash out: and it is soccer and pre-match only.

Who the Betway app suits, and who should look elsewhere

Betway suits the regular punter who bets a multi or two every week, because Bet Saver, 2UP and the Free Bet Club all reward exactly that. It suits anyone who wants sport, Aviator and a live casino in one app rather than three, and it suits people who deposit with vouchers or cash rather than a card.

Look elsewhere if a big welcome bonus is the thing that gets you through the door, because Betfred and World Sports Betting hand you far more up front. Look elsewhere too if horse racing is your main bet, where Interbet and Hollywoodbets go deeper. Our best betting apps in South Africa comparison lays out the alternatives.

Our verdict

Betway is the best all-round betting app in South Africa, and it gets there on the product rather than the sign-up. The betting tools are a level above the rest of the market, the casino and Aviator are properly built in, and you can fund and empty the account without ever using a bank card. The missing welcome bonus is a real gap. It is the only reason this is 4.7 out of 5 rather than higher. If you are going to hold one betting app, this is the one.
